Sunset Wood COVID-19 Update 5-22-2020

Dear Tenants,                                                          May 22, 2020

We will be taking a break from COVID-related updates this weekend unless necessary. Instead, in remembrance of Memorial Day we should be taking this time to honor those who have fallen.

You will notice that we have changed the American Flag flying in the circle and there is an amazing story behind this particular flag. It was donated to us by our very own Joann Smith – it was flown over the United States Capitol on May 23, 2002, at the request of the Honorable Sherwood L. Boehlert, Member of Congress. It was flown for Joann P. Smith for 33 years of Government Service.

We are honored to have been given this opportunity to fly such a prestigious flag and would like to thank Joann for this gracious gift. Memorial Day is a day to remember and honor all the brave heroes who served to hold our flag high. Let this flag represent our strength and vigor as a community – we will get through this time together, and I wish you all the best weekend possible.

Dear Tenants,                                                          May 21, 2020

SOCIAL DISTANCING – WHAT IS 6 FEET?

As the temperatures become warmer, the sun shines longer, and the urge to get outside become greater, it is important to remember what we still have to do in order to keep everyone safe. We have all been advised to stand 6 feet apart from others to lower our risk of getting infected with the coronavirus. But how can we tell whether we are standing far away enough from people or if we need to take a step back?

If you’re having difficulty estimating what exactly 6 feet looks like, here is a list of objects you can keep in-mind when measuring distance:

Sunset Wood COVID-19 Update 5-19-2020

Dear Tenants,                                                          May 19, 2020

There was some good news presented today regarding the fact that NYS is working with the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) and the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) to implement a 2-week pilot program in 16 hospitals across the state to allow increased visitations for family members and loved ones. As a part of the pilot, visits are time-limited and visitors are provided and must wear PPE and are subject to symptom and temperature checks.

Although this doesn’t sound like much, the move toward even attempting to allow visitors in hospitals is a HUGE shift in perspective of how we can now control the spread of this virus with the use of policies, procedures and of course PPE. The pilot program is one step closer to our society as a whole getting back to a new normal and putting our lives at ease just a little bit.

This week is going to be absolutely beautiful so I urge all of you to continue getting outside for fresh air and some sunshine because it is scientifically proven to improve your mood, immune system, and dopamine levels (aka make you happier)!

Stay safe & healthy,

Sunset Wood COVID-19 Update 5-18-2020

Dear Tenants,                                                          May 18, 2020

The federal government released optimistic news that the work on a COVID-19 vaccine is well on its way and will hopefully be available by the end of this year. With that being said, they are prioritizing those in nursing homes and senior citizens to receive the vaccine once it becomes available.

On a separate note, even though the big topic is “reopening,” realistically as a senior housing community we will be slower to reopen than the rest of the economy. This isn’t because we are not prepared, it is because we want to make sure that it is safe prior to opening our doors to people in the community. Internally, we have a process for every department and service to start up, however when this happens will be determined by our Regional Control Center that is comprised of our County Executive and the local Department of Health.

Although we receive direction from these agencies, it is our responsibility to keep you safe during this crisis. With that being said, just because a Phase allows certain services to open, we have our own internal phases in place and will let you all know what they entail as we get closer.

Stay safe & healthy,

We will provide you with those on a separate sheet this coming week. In the meantime, please enjoy this message from Pastor Elizabeth.

MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAPLAIN 5-17-2020

An Unknown god

“For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you…”

(Acts 17: 23)

How awful to think that our God may still be unknown in the world today especially during these tumultuous times. The thought that there are still people in the world who have built their hope on something that is false. Wait a minute, could that be a lot of us? Could we be placing some of our hopes on “unknown gods”? Even within our faith, can we be placing our hopes on things that are not of God? Are we scared because the stock market has gone crazy and our hard-earned money may be gone? Are we worried because we may not have a job when the country reopens? Will we be able to keep our belongings when all is said and done through this time in our history? These things can become unknown gods. Objects and money may be the things that we come to worship. Yes, we do need some money and things in order to survive, but when they become things that we covet, then they are a hindrance and not a help.

A few years ago, I was in a meeting with my financial advisor and he reminded me of a story about my mother and the last time the stock market took a bad hit. He told me that my mother took a phone call from him and asked him how he was doing. This caught him off guard because he was used to people yelling at him about their money issues. This was the first time someone had stopped and asked how he and his family were working through the tragedy. My mother was a woman of great faith and she wanted him to know that all was well because of a deep faith in a “known” God. Money wasn’t something that truly mattered to my mother at that time, but the peace of others during a difficult time was what honestly counted. I have chosen to follow in her footsteps. After all, she was a woman of great wisdom. She understood that our God would take care of us in all circumstances.

Later, after my mother passed, my father remarried. When he passed, his second wife, as executrices, chose to be hurtful and not allow my brother or myself anything that belonged to my parents without paying for it. There were several keepsakes that I wanted, but would have to pay for them if they were to be mine. A couple of those items were my mother’s jewelry, my grandmother’s silverware, the Bible I gave my dad, and baby albums of my brother and myself. I prayed about it and realized that I didn’t need those items. Yes, these things were of deep sentimental value, but I still had the memories. How much stuff do we really need anyway? “Blessed be God, because He has not rejected my prayer or removed His steadfast love from me.” (Psalm 66:20) His steadfast love in this case was His peace. I was blessed for it and have forgiven because of it😊

The difference between a known and an unknown God is HOPE. If one chooses to believe in and know Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit, there is truth, a desired anticipation, and a trust which comes with that which is known. Therefore, the opposite is true. There is only hopelessness in something that is unknown. Is there fulfillment in something unknown? Can a true confidence be found in what is unknown? We should be grateful to be able to rely on something known, someone who proved to be true and only gave hope through their existence, their death and resurrection. These are tangible, trust-filled things that we should choose not to deny, but to walk firmly alongside. God, as human in Jesus, became a part of our suffering on the cross. That is someone that we need to get to know. He chose to wallow in the heart of OUR matter. He got to the root of OUR being; pain and suffering. He chose to show us, His creation, that He gets our anguish and misery.  Don’t we need someone who identifies with our deepest level of pain and helps us to work through it with unfathomable love? Our creator chose to know His creation and turned around and showed His creation that we can know Him as well. John 14: 18-20 says just this, “I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.”  Jesus states emphatically that He is a part of us and we of Him. We are united, tethered together, family! Jesus is known so we are known, loved, cherished and identified in and with Christ.

Five months ago, I lost a beautiful friend (52), who otherwise very healthy, died of an unknown brain tumor. In a way this was a test of faith. Yes, the questions came. Why did this happen to such a vibrant life? Why did she have to die so young? Why were her 3 boys and husband left without their mother and wife? Why were her fifth-grade students being subjected to this pain? Why? Why? Why? The questions all came in the form of prayer and because we have a known God the answers to these questions and so many more will be answered in His time. There is much hope in that. Continued living can take place. One foot can be put in front of the other because we can talk with our Creator, our Comforter. A lot of time has been and continues to be spent in pain with this Consoler of my heartache.

There are many people who are enduring boatloads of pain during this crisis. Please sit with them, pray with them and show them that there is a known God. He can help us through our angst, worries, wows, and sorrow always. He is, after all, family.

”He (Jesus) was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God.”
(1 Peter 1:20-21)

Blessings,

Pastor Elizabeth

Sunset Wood COVID-19 Update 5-16-2020

Dear Tenants,                                                          May 16, 2020

During the time you all have been isolated in your units, the staff here at Sunset Wood have been “taking advantage” of that to make some necessary updates to the community. There are two major things you may notice when services start to open up again:

-        The Genesee Dining Room has received a new paint job on the ceiling, walls and trim. This is the main reason why it has been roped off for so long. The Maintenance team has been working to restore the room to its original glory and although the colors remain the same, it will look good as new once the Dining Room opens up again in the future.

-        The Salon is getting an entire upgrade! If you have been taking advantage of the hair salon upstairs, you may have noticed that updates haven’t been done in quite some time. We are taking this closure as an opportunity to remodel the entire salon with new floors, paint, decorations, all-purpose        chair, and shampoo station. Not only do you deserve to look good after leaving the salon, but the salon itself should look good as well.

Phase 1 Reopening - The Community at Sunset Wood 5-15-2020

Sunset Wood COVID-19 Update 5-14-2020

Dear Tenants,                                                          May 14, 2020

As Phase 1 reopening begins in our area starting May 15th (tomorrow), I will be providing you information as to what that means internally effective Monday, May 18th. The state is allowing the Mohawk Valley Region to begin Phase 1 while putting the responsibility on local officials to make sure that both businesses & individuals comply with the new regulations.

This means that we are starting the slow process of getting back to a new normal – however, it does not mean that everything is going back to the way it was before COVID-19. We are still going to be required to wear masks, we are still going to have to socially distance, and things will be different until we are able to feel completely safe again.

The document you will receive tomorrow is called an “infographic” which will outline each department that is affected by Phase 1. Any department not included will remain the same until Phase 2 is proposed by Oneida County.

Stay safe & healthy,

Sunset Wood COVID-19 Update 5-13-2020

Dear Tenants,                                                          May 13, 2020

There was a lot of repeat information from all of the lawmakers as Congress is looking to develop the next “stimulus” package in Washington DC, and as Oneida County looks to reopen Phase 1.

I will be providing you all with a write up that outlines what Phase 1 reopening means for YOU as a Sunset Wood tenant. Each department has their own internal process for how we will move forward with providing you with services. However, we are still at the mercy of state and local agencies as to when and how we are going to be able to start-up certain services again.

I would also like to stress that although services internally, and out in the community, are opening, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is safe! This virus is still heavily in our local community and closer to home than we ever thought. I urge you to still make good decisions about where you are going, what that person/organization is doing to keep you safe, and monitor yourself for symptoms every day.

Stay safe & healthy,

Dominick M. Manfredo
